The beautiful locations that make up Netflix’s Virgin River are the centerpiece of the show. Here are all of the series’ central filming locations.
The gorgeous setting of Netflix’s Virgin River is the show’s centerpiece – but where exactly is it filmed? Based on the book series of the same name by Robyn Carr, Virgin River follows nurse practitioner Mel (Alexandra Breckinridge) in her pursuit of a fresh start after the death of her husband as she moves from Los Angeles to the quaint titular town. Given the importance of the town of Virgin River and its woodsy setting to the story, it is natural to wonder where it was filmed, and although Virgin River itself is a fictional town both in the book series and in the show, the show’s picturesque settings are all real locations.
In the Netflix series, Virgin River is said to be a relatively isolated small town located in Northern California. However, the show is not actually shot in California, with many of the exterior shots of Virgin River being filmed on location near Vancouver in Canada. Here is a guide containing all of the major locations that are used in the filming of Virgin River, including a spotlight on two of the most important ones.
Where Virgin River Is Filmed
- Deer Lake Park, Burnaby, BC
- Port Coquitlam, BC
- Northbrook Court and North Fraser Way
- Bowen Island, BC
- Snug Cove (a harbor on Bowen Island’s east coast)
- Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Burnaby, BC
- Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Burnaby, BC
- Shannon Falls Provincial Park, Squamish, BC
- Agassiz, BC
Murdo Frazer Park, Vancouver, BC
Murdo Frazer Park is home to Mel’s cabin, which was initially run down in the show until Jack (Martin Henderson) fixes it up. Virgin River is not the only show to have featured the cabin that serves as Mel’s home, nicknamed “The Caretaker’s Cottage” in real life, as a setting, however. It was also used as a location in other popular shows, such as in Supernatural as the Lost Creek Ranger Station, in The Flash as Henry Allen’s home, and in Stargate SG-1 as Jack’s fishing cabin. Murdo Frazer Park’s “The Caretaker’s Cottage” is a real cabin outside of its feature in Virgin River and is inhabited by the park’s caretaker.
New Westminster Mansion, New Westminster, BC
Vernon Mullins’ Family Practice Clinic is actually a mansion in New Westminster, BC. Although the interior of Doc Mullins’ clinic, where Doc (Tim Matheson) and Mel bicker and treat their patients, is filmed on a set, the New Westminster Mansion serves as its exterior in Virgin River. Built in 1889 and situated near Queen’s Park, the stately Victorian mansion (which once served as a speakeasy during the Prohibition era) is just as traditional as Doc Mullins himself.
