Shiel Sexton Spotlight…
Our next Shiel Sexton Spotlight is Angie Hudson, our Preconstruction Coordinator on our Charlotte team! She has been working at Shiel Sexton for a year now, and in this interview, she talked with us about her position and her experience in the construction industry.
What do you like most about Shiel Sexton, or your position within the organization?
The quality that sticks out above so many others is Shiel Sexton’s dedication to their employees and the family-feel of the company. A lot of larger companies tend to treat their employees as a number, but I have witnessed the opposite here, especially in the Southeast Regional Office. The Shiel Sexton Management Team makes it a point to ask how we are, if we need anything professionally or even personally, etc. To me, that makes the difference in wanting vs. needing to come to work. When upper management listens and genuinely cares about their employees, it makes it more enjoyable to be at work– well, at least until I win the lottery and can retire early.
What are your typical day-to-day responsibilities?
I currently am working on prequalifying our trade partners in the SE Region for upcoming projects such as the MPMC Shell Building and Medical Office Upfits in Southern Pines. I also review bid requirements for each project and complete and assemble the submittal package. I help with take-offs, bid solicitations, attend pre-bid meetings, update our bidder lists, edit front end specifications when we have a CM project, to list a few things that I do at Shiel Sexton. We are a growing regional office, so I try to jump in wherever needed whether it is in preconstruction, operations, or general administrative tasks.
What are some of your favorite projects that you’ve worked on during your time with Shiel Sexton?
I am involved in the preconstruction stage of a project: bidding & prequalifying our trade partners. Some of the notable projects that I’ve worked on in the past year are The Aspens at Holly Springs (a senior living community that is currently in construction), Mount Pleasant Municipal Complex and Park Improvements in NC, and MPMC Shell Building and Medical Office Upfits in Southern Pines, NC. The last two are both currently in the buyout stage. Our Precon Team has been successful in acquiring new projects even with the immensely competitive Charlotte area GC/CM market.
What do you like most about working in the Construction industry?
I like to see the finished product. It’s gratifying to work on something that is measurable and, in this case, see the progression of everyone’s hard work, starting with negotiations and the conceptual design, ground-breaking, through the Certificate of Occupancy and turnover. There are so many players involved in the process of erecting a building. It’s crucial that everyone communicates effectively and works together to get the final result. During the process, we create new relationships and solidify partnerships with owners, architects, engineers and most importantly our trade partners that enable us to be successful.
Thank you, Angie, for your hard work and continuous service at Shiel Sexton!
