You know me, I’m not usually one for interior trends. I prefer to take a more considered, mindful approach, creating a space that can stand the test of time, not go out of fashion in the blink of an eye. But sometimes, as much as I don’t dare to admit it, I am swayed and seduced. And this time it’s by the checked interior trend.
From cotton gingham duvets and checkerboard rugs, to grid patterned cushions and cross hatch pillows, checked homeware is popping up everywhere. I don’t often introduce a lot of pattern into my home, but I can get on board with simple stripes and monochrome checks. I would find floral motifs a bit fussy, but with checks, there’s something about the order and linearity that appeals. They still count as pattern, but they’re a bit less overpowering or tying. A checked design will go with almost anything, adding a graphic pop of something to an otherwise neutral scheme.
The checked interior trend is probably one of the easiest to introduce into your home. It could just be one piece that adds a little focal point in a room – a new cushion to update your sofa or some gingham bedding to upgrade your bedroom. Even the addition of a checked tea towel in a kitchen or some gingham napkins on a dining table can help elevate your interior. I think this is definitely a trend where less is more. Let the pattern speak for itself. You can of course mix and match, but I would make sure there is a contrast between checks – either in size (a big checkerboard rug paired with a cushion with a smaller pattern on a sofa) or colour (a beige checked cushion alongside a black and white checked throw).
Here I’ve curated together 12 of my favourite checked homewares on the high street right now.
