Blending Traditional and Modern, English Country Style Returns

I’m seeing lots of signs that English Country style is coming back and coming on strong. After years of white and gray spaces we seem to be in a renaissance of color, pattern and counter skirts.

This is the current cover of Veranda and English style is its theme. Now, I am generally loathe to criticize another designer’s work because a) we work hard and b) this is someone’s personal home and usually the designer is actually listening to what their client’s want and mixing in some treasured belongings. This is all to say, I don’t love this. It’s too busy for my personal taste. I’d prefer the rug and modern art to come out. The wallpaper does nothing to set off the art and vice versa. But I do love all the rest of it.

English country home style is a classic and timeless interior design aesthetic that draws inspiration from the rural countryside of England. It emphasizes comfort, warmth, and a sense of lived-in charm. Here are 10 elements typically associated with English country home style:

  1. Natural Materials: English country homes often feature natural materials such as wood, stone, and brick. These materials add warmth and authenticity to the space.
  2. Antique Furniture: Traditional, antique furniture pieces with a slightly worn or distressed look are commonly found in English country homes. Pieces like Windsor chairs, upholstered wingback chairs, and vintage wooden tables are staples.
  3. Floral Patterns: Floral patterns are a hallmark of English country style. You’ll find them on upholstery, curtains, wallpapers, and even dishes. Traditional floral designs like chintz and toile are popular choices.
  4. Plaid and Gingham: Classic plaid and gingham patterns are often used for upholstery, throw pillows, and table linens. These patterns add a cozy and rustic feel.
  5. Rich, Warm Colors: The color palette for English country style tends to include warm, earthy tones like deep greens, rich reds, warm yellows, and soft blues. These colors evoke a sense of comfort and coziness.
  6. Exposed Beams: Many English country homes have exposed wooden beams on the ceilings, which contribute to the rustic and charming ambiance.
  7. Fireplaces: Fireplaces, often made of stone or brick, are a focal point in English country homes. They provide both warmth and a sense of tradition.
  8. Vintage Accessories: Decorative accessories like old-fashioned clocks, porcelain figurines, framed botanical prints, and antique mirrors are commonly used to enhance the vintage look.
  9. Layered Textures: English country style incorporates various textures to create depth and interest. Think of layered rugs, textured upholstery, and soft throws.
  10. Mismatched China and Tableware: Instead of perfectly coordinated sets, English country homes often feature collections of mismatched china, tableware, and glassware. This eclectic approach adds character and a sense of history to the dining area.
