#ExpectMore, #Proud2BSSC, #ShielSexton, Employee Relations
One of Shiel Sexton’s own has been recognized in the IBJ’s 20 in their Twenties campaign, which “honors emerging leaders who are making an impact on their communities at the very start of their careers.” This description certainly fits Project Manager Cam O’Connor, who has built an impressive resume at just 29 years old.
Cam began his career with Shiel Sexton in high school as a summer field worker. Following his graduation from Purdue University, Cam hired on in 2019 as an assistant project manager. Recently, he oversaw the $330 million budget for Gainbridge Fieldhouse and managed the demolition, structural, and general trade components. He’s now back at his alma mater leading the charge on the Pete Dye Clubhouse, Max W & Maileen Brown Family Hall First Floor Renovation, and Purdue Memorial Union Second Floor Hospitality Renovation.
Let’s get to know Cam behind the title:
What initially sparked your interest in this field or industry?
I have loved building things since my LEGO days. Whether it was taking apart computers or cleaning the dust off of my grandpa’s power tools, I have always had a knack for building. Now I get to do what I love every day on a much larger scale.
What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on so far in your career?
As a kid, I loved the Pacers and Reggie Miller. Being able to work on Gainbridge Fieldhouse was truly an amazing experience. The behind-the-scenes operation of the facilities in Indianapolis is truly remarkable. I also greatly enjoyed studying the original plans for this building and seeing the evolution of one of Indy’s most notable buildings over the decades.
What’s one skill you’re hoping to master or develop further in your profession?
Public speaking. I heard a stat one time that public speaking is the most common fear, more feared than death. So I find it interesting at a funeral that more people would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy. Throughout the years, I have found inspiration and amazement from several incredible speakers that are so captivating in their presentations.
Do you have any side hobbies or passions that you believe could complement your career?
I still thoroughly enjoy building things. This enjoyment combined with real estate investments has given me a great insight into the market and trends throughout the community. I find my experience in these areas lends very well to my career.
Congratulations, Cam!
