‘The Game’ always delivers, and Saturday’s edition was no different. Michigan fell behind early in Columbus and responded for the program’s most monumental win since last year’s victory over the Buckeyes. No. 3 Michigan beat No. 2 Ohio State 45-23 to move to 12-0 and earn a spot in the Big Ten championship game next week.
The Wolverines got punched in the nose by Ohio State’s offense early on, but the defense came through with a huge stop on the Buckeyes’ second drive and set the tone for the rest of the game.
After two big second quarter plays helped Michigan hang around, Jim Harbaugh’s team took full control in the second half. The Wolverines outscored the Buckeyes 28-3 after halftime, slowing the game down in the third quarter and putting a stamp on the win with two explosive runs from Donovan Edwards. Edwards would rush for 207 yards in the second half alone.

J.J. McCarthy played the game of his life, throwing for 263 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 completions. Even when the running game wasn’t doing him any favors, he stayed patient and avoided mistakes to put Michigan in position for the win.
Ohio State is left with more questions than answers after losing to Michigan at home for the first time since 2000. An offense that had no problem in the first quarter just couldn’t get anything going in the second half, and the defense couldn’t contain big plays all day. Four of Michigan’s six touchdowns went for at least 45 yards.
Michigan will play for a Big Ten championship next weekend, and a second consecutive trip to the College Football Playoff is all but assured.
Ohio State’s fate, meanwhile, is in the hands of the selection committee. The Buckeyes will be watching what TCU, USC, and LSU do next weekend as they hope for a chance to redeem themselves.

Michigan 38, Ohio State 23

3:23 p.m. — Michigan goes nowhere and misses a 54-yard field goal. Ryan Day’s questionable decision to punt clearly worked here. Now will the Buckeyes’ offense respond?
3:20 p.m. — Unbelievable. Another Ohio State pass interference. Michigan has moved up 30 yards without doing much of anything.
3:19 p.m. — Another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Ohio State gives Michigan much better field position after the punt.
3:17 p.m. — It’s ruled a catch, but Stroud’s next pass is deflected and falls incomplete. The Buckeyes are punting with under 12 minutes remaining…
3:14 p.m. — Officials will look at whether Julian Fleming’s catch near the sideline was actually a catch. If the ruling stands, it’ll be a critical 3rd & 3 for the Buckeyes.
Michigan 31, Ohio State 20
3:06 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — McCarthy barrels into the end zone for the score! Michigan is up by 11 after a nearly eight-minute long drive.

2:58 p.m. — Michigan has completely turned the pace of this game around to fit their style of play. The Wolverines are playing strong defense and suddenly running the ball well. Can they make it a two-possession game?

2:37 p.m. — The Buckeyes make quick work of Michigan’s offense and will start just ahead of midfield.
2:35 p.m. — Michigan starts deep in its own territory and isn’t going anywhere yet. 3rd & 10 coming up, with Ohio State looking at great field position if the Wolverines can’t convert.
2:32 p.m. — The Wolverines’ defense has risen to the challenge ever since that stop at the end of Ohio State’s second drive. Buckeyes punting here.
Michigan 24, Ohio State 20

1:43 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — What an answer from Ohio State! Marvin Harrison Jr. makes a tremendous catch near the sideline for a 42-yard touchdown. The Buckeyes answer almost instantly to re-take the lead.

— FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX) November 26, 2022
1:40 p.m. — Tensions are boiling over. Players get in each other’s faces at the start of Ohio State’s drives. Jim Harbaugh is fired up, but he may just be trying to keep his own players out of trouble.
Michigan 17, Ohio State 13

1:34 p.m. — Ohio State isn’t able to complete the drive after an incompletion by Stroud. They’ll hope Ruggles can get some points out of it…
1:32 p.m. — Usually this kind of crowd would create issues for the visiting team, but Ohio State has two false starts in the first half. This one disrupts what’s been a tremendous response by the Buckeyes’ offense.
1:31 p.m. — Yet again, Marvin Harrison Jr. makes an NFL catch. He makes you forget Ohio State is missing Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Buckeyes are already well into Michigan territory.
1:30 p.m. — Let’s see how Ohio State’s offense responds. The Buckeyes are coming off a pair of disappointing drives.
Ohio State 10, Michigan 10
1:26 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — There goes Cornelius Johnson! Wow! Johnson escapes a defender after a short pass and takes it 69 yards to tie the game. Who needs a running game?

1:25 p.m. — Nothing is working on the ground for Michigan to this point. Wolverines quickly facing a 3rd & 9.
1:18 p.m. — Michigan’s defense is starting to get more comfortable. Stroud throws a pair of incompletions after a quick first down, and the Buckeyes will punt.
1:15 p.m. — If Michigan is forced to get into a shootout with Ohio State, this game won’t be competitive for long. That’s not the Wolverines’ style of play, and it’s hurting them so far.
1:12 p.m. — Michigan’s drive goes nowhere. Ohio State’s defense brings pressure early on, and McCarthy throws a hopeless ball downfield on 3rd & 11. Wolverines can’t take advantage of the defensive stop.

Ohio State 10, Michigan 3
12:53 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Noah Ruggles connects from 32 yards out. That’s a win for Michigan’s defense, one that the Wolverines hope will set the tone for the rest of the game.
12:52 p.m. — All of a sudden, Michigan does have the answers. The Wolverines slow down the run game and force a Stroud incompletion on 3rd & 9. Field goal coming…

12:40 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Jake Moody drills a 49-yard field goal. Couldn’t have kicked any better than that. Michigan gets some points out of its opening drive.
12:38 p.m. — Michigan is forced to take a timeout to avoid a delay of game penalty. The strategy on 3rd & 20 is likely to just get into field goal range.
12:35 p.m. — Ohio State brings the pressure and forces an intentional grounding call. It’s 2nd & 25 for the Wolverines.
12:34 p.m. — Wow, McCarthy stays patient and finds Ronnie Bell downfield for a 32-yard gain. That’s two third down conversions for Michigan, both on passes.

12:22 p.m. — That was an NFL catch by Marvin Harrison Jr., who makes a one-armed catch on the sideline. Ohio State’s offense is moving.
Marvin Harrison Jr is insane. This is really good coverage by DJ Turner. He squeezes the space, plays chest to chest, but the throw by Stroud is on point.
Incredible catch!

12:21 p.m. — Nice run by Xavier Johnson, who takes the Buckeyes near midfield. The running game is handling a heavy workload early on.

12:18 p.m. — After an injury to C.J. Hicks on the return delays the opening snap, Stroud throws an incompletion toward the left sideline.
12:15 p.m. — We are underway! Michigan wins the toss and defers. Stroud and the Buckeyes will start with the ball.
12:11 p.m. — I like this theory the best.

12:06 p.m. — For what it’s worth, kickoff is officially set closer to 12:15 for this game. They’re going to let the suspense build for a bit.
11:58 a.m. — C.J. Stroud would be satisfied with the win, but today is also a massive day for his Heisman hopes. With Caleb Williams trailing close behind, a big performance on this grand stage would go a long way.
