Rick Barnes provided an injury update Monday for standout forward Dalton Knecht, who suffered an ankle injury in the closing minutes of the Vols’ loss to North Carolina this past week.
Knecht led a furious comeback attempt that very possibly could have hit its mark before he exited with the aforementioned injury. The Northern Colorado transfer was up to 37 points – which ties a record by an opposing player at the Dean Dome – before he was forced to leave the game.
But thankfully, Barnes shot down the idea that it would be long-term quickly. And on Monday, Barnes told reporters that Knecht is day-to-day for this week’s matchup against George Mason.
“Well, he’s progressing. I think we’ll know more tomorrow,” Barnes said. “But he’s moving around, doing what we’ve asked him to do and he tells me he feels okay. But we’ll see. Again, I just think it’s a day by day right now.”
That’s fantastic news for Tennessee, which has faced one of the toughest schedules of any team in the country so far this season. The Vols have faced off against Wisconsin in Madison, Purdue and Kansas in Maui and finally North Carolina in Chapel Hill. That’s brutal.
The Vols went 1-3 across that stretch, with all 3 losses coming by less than 10 points. Tennessee and George Mason are set to tip off on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN Plus.
