Or, you might add a security system to your home. The roof is the most expensive home improvement expense you will ever make. You want a roof that suits your climate, home design, budget, and lifestyle.

Different Types of Roofs

There are many popular roof styles, each with its pros and cons. Here are some options for roofs that you might consider when building or remodeling your home.

Hip

A hip roof is made up of four sides, which all join together to form the roof’s peak. This type of roof is well-known for its strength and ability to withstand strong winds and heavy snow. Hip roofs are more costly and take more effort to install due to their complex design.

Gable

Gable roofs are America’s most popular type of roof. Although there are many types of gable roofs, all share a triangular shape. Gable roofs are easy to construct and cost less than other roof types. They are great for areas that are susceptible to hurricanes or strong winds, as they can shed water well.

Flat

There are three types of flat roofs: built-up (BUR), modified bitumen (MBR), and rubber membrane (EPDM).

  • BUR: This is the cheapest option. It’s known for being fire-resistant and great for decks that look like a roof. However, it can also be heavy and difficult to put in.
  • MBR: Very easy to install, energy-efficient, and durable. However, it can also be dangerous if you have a small fire.
  • EPDM: Very durable and easy to install, but not energy efficient. It can also be punctured easily.
