The focus on infrastructure is at a generational high point. Whether it’s reinvestment in the roads and bridges serving our communities so well for decades, or construction of the next generation of renewable energy and a decarbonized grid, all eyes are trained on the work of civil and infrastructure builders and the demand for their work is higher than ever.
To that end, civil builders are turning to technology to tune their operations for maximum impact and efficiency. Procore can help builders produce more work faster and with better project outcomes across a complex landscape of project stakeholders.
Here are just some of the civil and infrastructure projects of all sizes and scope that are being built with Procore:
1. L300: Lynnwood Link Extension
Builder: Skanska
Location: Lynnwood, Washington
This extension of the Sound Transit light rail system provides vital, affordable transportation options for local residents, giving riders service between south Snohomish County and the University of Washington, downtown Seattle, the Eastside, Sea-Tac Airport and more. Skanska’s delivery of the project included the construction of 3.8 miles of aerial guideway, two-elevated stations, and a 1,670-stall parking garage at the Lynnwood Transit Center. The $778M project also includes sound walls, stormwater retention, utility locations, and more. The Skanska team developed creative solutions to mitigate impacts such as noise to adjacent neighborhoods, environmental impact on wetlands, and freeway closures during construction.
2. I-35 NEX Central
Builder: Ferrovial Construction / Webber (Alamo NEX Construction, LLC)
Location: San Antonio, Texas
This $1.5-billion project for TxDOT consists of the design, construction, and maintenance of approximately 9.5 miles of non-tolled improvements along I-35, including a portion of I-410 North and Loop 1604. The project scope includes 22 miles of elevated structures, eight direct connectors in two major interchanges, and the reconstruction of more than 5.5 miles of main lanes and frontage roads. Building over 22 miles of viaduct in a limited space while minimizing disruption to existing traffic and infrastructure is a unique challenge. The I-35 NEX Central project is scheduled to be completed in late 2027.
3. LaGuardia Airport Terminal B
Builder: Skanska
Location: New York City, New York
LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B serves more than 14 million passengers annually. The redevelopment at one of the nation’s busiest airports began in 2016 and is the largest public-private partnership (P3) in U.S. aviation history. It is one of the most complex projects ever undertaken. Through close collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and other stakeholders, contractors developed a multi-phase plan that allowed for the ground-up construction of a brand-new terminal on a small geographic footprint, all without disrupting operations of the existing facility.
4. METRO Transit Southwest Green Line Extension
Builder: RailWorks / Delta
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
This project for METRO Transit is a significant investment in public transit for the Minneapolis greater metro area, adding 14.5 miles and 16 stations to the existing Green Line lite rail transit system and is set to have a massive impact on the surrounding community. Nearly 56,000 people live within a 10-minute walk of the corridor, and people traveling to and within the corridor will access nearly 81,000 jobs along the extension andd 145,000 jobs in downtown Minneapolis. RailWorks / Delta scope of work includes the installation of 14.5 miles of lite rail track and freight track maintenance work.
5. Moynihan Train Hall
Builder: Skanska
Location: New York City, New York
Shortly after completing an expansion and modernization project that linked the West End Concourse at Penn Station to the historic James A. Farley Post Office Building, Skanska was selected as the design-builder of the $1.6B rehabilitation of Moynihan Train Hall. The scope included a new, 225,000-SF train hall; 112,000-SF of retail space; 738,000-SF of commercial office space; and the exterior restoration of the 109-year-old Farley Building, as well as the adjacent Annex building.
Within the train hall, Skanska constructed nine platforms and 17 tracks, along with passenger facilities, waiting areas, security spaces and ticketing areas for the Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak. The project reduces congestion for more than 600,000 daily commuters. The train hall is accentuated by 92-foot high, barrel-vaulted skylights, which required 775,000 pounds of steel reinforcement and the installation of nearly 2,200 individual glass panels. Skanska was awarded Procore’s prestigious Groundbreaker Award for General Contractor Project Excellence in 2022.
6. MCCNO Convention Center Blvd. and Linear Park
Builder: Landis Construction
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
As the City of New Orleans worked to revitalize its historic riverfront, the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center saw an opportunity to be a part of the solution by engaging Landis Construction to reduce a one mile stretch of Convention Center Blvd. to two lanes, and to create a pedestrian park in the liberated space. The project also required construction of a new transit center and relocation of a major transmission line into the city.
7. LA Regional Connector
Builder: Skanska
Location: Los Angeles, California
The LA Regional Connector is comprised of about 1.9 miles of underground light rail that connects the Metro Gold, Metro Blue, and Metro Expo lines to increase ridership and reduce commute times throughout Los Angeles. The project consisted of many technically complicated components and required careful coordination across a large number of public and private stakeholders. The project team was able to work through challenges like the COVID pandemic, the constraints of urban worksites, and supply chain obstacles in a timely manner to deliver this transformative project that has been a long-time priority transit project for Los Angeles.
8. Jade Meadow Solar Project
Builder: Vanguard Energy Partners, LLC
Location: Frostburg, Maryland
This 26 MW solar project in Maryland is being successfully completed after overcoming unforeseen challenges posed by the ground conditions of a reclaimed mine. The project’s success hinged on effective collaborative teamwork and consistent communication among the Solar EPC, subcontractors, and the project owner. Negotiating the challenging terrain associated with construction on such sites, the project involved innovative civil engineering techniques and the reinforcement of 7,743 piles to support this sustainable initiative.
Every obstacle encountered served to enhance the team’s expertise, reinforcing their commitment to future endeavors in converting unconventional spaces into eco-friendly energy hubs.
