How to declutter your way to zen (and be kind to yourself too)

By Juniper Quinn

Many of us are drowning in a sea of clutter and chaos at home. Decluttering can transform your living space and also elevate your focus, your confidence and your mood. Here are some simple steps to help you on your journey:

  1. Start small, dream big: Begin by tackling tiny tasks, like taming the jungle of toys or conquering the mountain of mail. Dream big about the tranquil haven you’re about to create.
  2. Bid adieu to clutter, embrace joy: Sort through your treasures and bid farewell to the clutter that no longer serves you. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and keep only what sparks joy.
  3. Organise with panache: Get creative with storage solutions and give each item a cosy nook to call home. Bins, baskets, and shelves become your trusty sidekicks in this epic quest for order.
  4. Embrace the dance of tidiness: Make tidying a delightful daily ritual, put on your favourite music and waltz through your enchanted kingdom. Wave your wand (or feather duster) and watch chaos retreat in awe.
  5. Clear out your digital clutter: Organise your email inboxes to streamline digital files and apps. Clear out all those unwanted pictures and videos. The satisfaction will be immense!
  6. Revel in gratitude: Take a moment to revel in the newfound serenity of your clutter-free abode. Dance with gratitude for the peace and harmony that now reign supreme.

Banishing the chaos and clearing out the clutter will leave you feeling calm, free and like a boss!

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant barrage of clutter that seem to multiply overnight. But fear not, for decluttering your home can be a powerful antidote to the chaos, bringing peace and tranquillity to your daily life. By decluttering your home, you can create a space that feels calm and inviting, making it easier to relax and unwind after a long day.

But where to begin? The thought of decluttering an entire home can be daunting, but remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day! Start small by focusing on one room or even just one area within a room. Set realistic goals for what you want to accomplish and celebrate each small victory along the way.

If you are planning a renovation project, decluttering before the work begins is a must. Even if you are only renovating one room, once you are immersed in the ‘zone’ of decluttering, seize the opportunity to continue with the other rooms in your home. You may also want to consider as part of your renovation, the directional aspects, including feng shui concepts.

Research shows that decluttering your living space can directly affect mental health by; reducing stress and anxiety, boosting creativity, improving sleep quality and enhancing self esteem. So, be ruthless in your decluttering efforts, but also be kind to yourself. It’s okay to hold onto sentimental items or things that you might need in the future, but try to be honest about what you truly need and use on a regular basis.
