Message from President Brian Sandoval sent to campus
Earlier today we were deeply saddened to learn that one of our students was found deceased on campus. The death of a student affects our entire University. We mourn this tragic loss. On behalf of the University, I wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased student.
As previously noted, there is no indication of suspicious circumstances and we have confirmed there was and is no threat to campus. Out of respect for the student and the family, we will continue to honor their privacy.
Times of deep and profound loss are a reminder that we must always look out for one another. It is important that we come together, and perhaps just as importantly, know that in coming together, each of us processes moments like this quite differently. Anyone who needs help is encouraged to seek out a number of University resources.
Already today we have seen in the wake of this tragic news what often happens on our campus. Students have comforted other students. Faculty and staff have reached out and have made themselves available. We need each other like never before. Let us all on this tragic day continue to offer one another grace and understanding.
Sincere regards,
Brian Sandoval
President
10:50 am. update: The University of Nevada, Reno sent an email to staff and employees just after 10:30 a.m. saying there was no threat after a body was found on campus just after 7 a.m.
The body of a female was found on the north end of the Quad near the Paul Laxalt Engineering building and the Mackay School of Mines building.
UNR said construction workers found the body.
Both buildings are open and the area where the body was found has been cleared by police. UNR said University Police are investigating.
According to UNR’s Director of Communications Scott Walquist, little is known about the person who was found between the Mackay School of Mines building and the Laxalt Engineering building on the north side of the Quad, including approximate age or whether she was a student.
Police from multiple agencies responded, including University Police, Walquist said.
Walquist said there is an ongoing investigation, but police said early reports indicated there is nothing suspicious.
The Quad area is currently fenced off in preparation for graduation ceremonies later this month.
