Kennebunk River Architects have designed this breathtaking shingle-style beach cottage located amidst the coastal sand dunes of Biddeford, Maine. Envisioned as a vacation home, this property presented the project team with a myriad of challenges, including navigating Shore Land Zoning and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
To add to the complexity, the property also featured a pre-existing paper street right of way, which had to be delicately preserved without any intrusion from new development. Despite these hurdles, the resulting design offers a generous 3,800 square feet of living space, spread over three levels, each space maximizing the sweeping ocean views.

The lowest level encompasses the main entry, laundry, mechanical space, a communal living room, and three bedrooms, all designed to offer both comfort and proximity to the breathtaking outdoors. Ascending to the middle level, you’ll discover the heart of the home – the main living floor, complete with inviting living, dining, kitchen, and media spaces, over the garage below.
Finally, the uppermost floor is devoted entirely to the owner’s bedroom suite, providing a serene sanctuary with panoramic ocean vistas. To fully embrace the mesmerizing surroundings, numerous exterior decks and porches have been strategically incorporated, beckoning residents and guests alike to relax and savor the beauty of the ocean from multiple directions.
What We Love: This coastal Maine beach cottage provides a wonderful getaway respite for its owners with dreamy waterfront views.
