Get ready for backyard fun with these easy to make DIY cornhole game boards. You can make your own set in just a few a hours using pre-cut tops.
I’m super excited about this DIY yard game! I used to make custom cornhole boards and sell them when I was in college to help pay the rent. It was a side hustle to my side hustle and I knew I could knock these out in a couple of hours and so can you!
This is just one of three yard games I made to have for our wedding reception in our backyard last year. Be sure to check out the Giant Connect Four Game and the Ladder Golf as well!

Making the Base of the DIY Cornhole Game Boards
Step 1. Cut 2x4s to size for the frame and for the legs using a miter saw. Round the bottom of the legs using a jig saw.
I just used a solo cup and traced it on the end of the leg to create a curve. To make sure both legs are the same, cut one then trace around it onto the other leg piece then cut and sand smooth.
Step 2. Assemble the frame using wood glue and wood screws. Once you have it assembled, fill the screw holes with wood putty.
Finishing Touches
I’m really excited to use this pre-cut cornhole board for the top! It’s going to save a ton of time on this project. The hole is nice and smooth. It’s a little more expensive to use the pre-cut plywood board, but if you don’t have a 6″ hole saw or jigsaw this is perfect.
Step 3. Pre stain the cornhole board. I didn’t want anything too rich so I used an exterior stain, applied a healthy coat, then wiped off the excess.
Step 4. Sand and paint the base. You know I love multi-tasking and dividing and conquering to save time, so while the stain dried I sanded and painted the base and legs.
After sanding the base, I used Behr Premium Spray paint in Orion Gray to paint the base and legs. It’s a really stealy color and I just love it.
Step 5. Paint the cornhole board. While the base dries, it’s time to customize the board. This is the fun part! I used painter’s tape to create neat geometric lines and used a couple of colors to make my design vision come to life.
I painted the first section, in the middle, Toasty Gray. It is hands down my favorite color of this project and I want to paint everything with it. Be sure to remove the painter’s tape before it is completely dry to ensure you get crisp clean lines.
Next, I added two more stripes on either side of the middle using flat black and antique copper spray paint from Behr.
Step 6. Attach the legs to the frame using a lag bolt, a washer, and a wing nut. You want to make sure that the legs can move freely without coming out the other side of the framing.
Since the Behr spray paint can also be used on metal, I spray painted the lag bolts to blend in with the frame.
Step 7. Finally, attach the top of the board to the frame using wood glue and brad nails, and your DIY cornhole game boards are done!
I love how these turned out! The great thing about making your own cornhole game boards is that you can customize the design using any color you want.
They are easy to set up and easy to put away simply by folding down the leg. They’re really lightweight so these DIY cornhole game boards are easy to carry.
Don’t forget to pin this project for later!
