Bonin Architects in collaboration with McGray & Nichols designed this stunning lakeside house for a newly retired couple in the Lakes Region, New Hampshire. The goal of this project was to create an abundance of entertaining spaces for family gatherings, intimate living spaces for daily living, and maximize lake views throughout. Additionally, the architects prioritized enhancing and respecting the natural environment when constructing this idyllic home.
The gently sloping site presented the architects with a unique design challenge. The program called for arranging outdoor spaces next to the main-level kitchen, living, and great room for a seamless indoor-outdoor flow that provides accessible outdoor living. The solution was to create garden terraces away from the house using locally sourced fieldstone to retain the grade and form a series of planters down the hillside.
These planters showcase a mix of colorful blooms from May through frost, while offering exciting textures during the winter season. Below the terrace, a lush lawn with dappled shade serves as an ideal play area for the homeowner’s grandchildren during the summer months. This beautiful property is bordered by native woodlands.

The interior of this dwelling has equally unique design elements. Since this residence is enjoyed as a year-round retirement home, the architects integrated an elevator that provides access to all levels. The main level encompasses an owner’s bedroom suite, formal living, library, great room, dining, kitchen and pantry, mudroom and laundry, and powder room.
The library, a cherished space, exudes tranquility and warmth, with alder paneling that radiates in the sun—ideal for evening reading or enjoying sunsets over the frozen lake during late afternoons during the winter.
The second level encompasses two bedrooms with baths, a multi-purpose room, a bunkroom, and a playroom for the grandchildren to enjoy.
The lower level includes a craft room, TV room, cigar lounge, and a spa (inspired by the couple’s trips to the Far East). There is access from this level to the lakeside, which allows for ease of use and convenient storage. Additionally, lakeside access passes directly through (and under) the home’s fireplace, a structural challenge presented to the project team, and a playful design element.
