Shaping Your Interior Design Journey

As creatives, our work is often sparked by a bolt of inspiration. It’s like a guiding light that shapes our creative journey. But do you ever stop to think about the true power of that little spark? Let me share with you some insights on inspiration and how it can transform your work as an interior designer.

The Nature of Inspiration

Inspiration isn’t a one-time event. It’s a process that happens little by little, day by day. It’s like practising a sport or an art – the more you do it, the better you get at it. I’ve discovered this through countless interactions with my interior designer clients. They allow themselves to be inspired, and their work reflects it in subtle yet profound ways.

Where to Find Your Muse

We all have our sources of inspiration. For me, it’s travel, art, and design. I’ve learned to dedicate time to these interests, and they’ve become an integral part of my brand. As interior designers, your canvas is the space you shape, and your ideas are the brushstrokes.

Inspiration in the Unexpected

Sometimes, inspiration lurks in the most unexpected corners. I’ve found it in the craftsmanship of artisans, the cultural rhythms of bustling cities, and the serene beauty of frescos in Florentine houses. These experiences, and many more, inspire me and shape my approach to work.

Inspiration: Beyond Aesthetics

Inspiration goes beyond helping you conceptualise colour palettes or forms. Its power is accessed when understanding concepts and applying them to unrelated and new challenges. I came across an AI artist on Instagram who marries Renaissance architecture with modern-day fashion – a striking example of how two concepts can create something new and beautiful.

Cultivating Inspiration

Inspiration can be honed, much like any other skill. Here are some simple practices to cultivate it:

  • Keep a notebook: Jot down your thoughts and observations from new experiences.
  • Be open to experiences: Dedicate a little time every day to seek inspiration, whether it’s through a book, music, or a leisurely walk.
  • Slow down: Absorb your surroundings. You’ll be surprised at how much more you perceive when you take the time to look.

The Impact of Inspiration on Your Work

Inspiration is not just a mental state; it has tangible benefits. It enables us to transcend our limitations and see new possibilities. It boosts our self-esteem, optimism, and belief in our abilities. It births creativity and facilitates progress towards our goals. And most importantly, it increases our well-being, giving us a sense of purpose and gratitude.

As interior designers, cultivating inspiration will add depth to your designs and help define your unique point of view. And the more clarity you have about your creative stance, the more power your work will hold.

Here’s to an inspiring week.
